1 Comment- Add comment Written on 20-Mar-2012 by debbiedarlingThe UK has 10 squads training through the winter at various locations around the country. The final training weekend of the winter is a great way for them all to get together & practice some big fleet racing & gauge how far they've come in the 5 months.
Saturday was dull, dreary & raining when the 77 boats arrived. By the time they got on the water the rain stopped & a perfect 8 - 12 knots allowed for great training both in & out of the harbour. Starting practice on a huge line proved very useful for all sailors.
The sailors joined together for a squad dinner in the evening followed by a talk from John Derbyshire OBE RYA Performance Director & Racing Manager & ex-Feva parent !
Sunday by contrast was beautiful & sunny & the squads gathered out in the bay for practice races on a trapezoid course in flights run by the Race Officer for the Worlds. The rain clouds gathered resulting in shifty tricky conditions & the winds moving through 90 degrees & down from 9 knots to 3 & back again ! Lets hope we don't have weather like that in July.

He thinks he's going to be talking to 12 boats worth - 24 odd sailors give or take a few. Then you show up with all of the squads and he's suddenly facing 80 boats worth - 160 odd kids... Great look on his face! Well worth the money. I can assure you his smile wasn't this serene!

Can't argue with an all squads w/e down at Hayling, venue for the worlds starting in 132 days time. This is a massive event in it's own right and it will be time for everyone to renew those friendships after a winter doing things in their own squads. Should be epic! The other big thing is interesting to all but most of all to all our lady sailors.
The trials start in Santander (Spain) on Saturday and will last for a whole week to choose the ladies skiff for the 2016 Olympics in Rio. Our very own RS will be competing for the privilege - the RS900. A sweet machine if there ever was one. It is up against 5 other skiffs but don't expect a decision by the end of the week. The evaluation panel report to the technical committee who will report to the ISAF General Council who will decide at the mid year meeting during May.
Mouthwatering. But get your RS Feva under control first! Enjoy your weekend.

On Saturday morning the wind was from the South and came blasting down the lake in ferocious gusts of 25kts+ making for very challenging sailing, but Ollie was brilliant in ensuring we all got on the water and he persevered with the training exercises in the morning until even he had to admit defeat when five boats were flattened by one particularly nasty squall. Fortunately by the afternoon the wind had abated slightly, and we got back on the water and Ollie was able run a series of four short races.
Sunday was forecast to be even windier and we were faced with the prospect of having to remain ashore, but we all learned that invaluable lesson that forecasts can be, and often are, wrong. Though it wasn't as windy as predicted, the forecasters were right when they said the the wind would be from the north and cold. Brrr. Still it was a relief to be sailing and we all got to practice our starts, focusing on approaching the line and holding position, and Ollie had the video evidence to show we definitely improved. Then in the afternoon to warm us all up he had us doing "gut-busters" - just the job. All in all a hugely beneficial and enjoyable weekends sailing and thanks must go to Ollie for his excellent coaching and Debbie for making it happen............... There is no doubt that the RS Games was a tremendous success, with a grand total of 525 boats and 875 competitors taking part in nine world, European and national championships over 12 days at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, raising the bar both on and off the water.
The RS committee ( including me ! ) worked hard for months to get this event together so now its time for RS Feva to push the bar even higher. Roll on the Feva Worlds.
